History of the bridges crossing
the Piscataqua River

Prior to construction of the Memorial Bridge there was regular ferry service between Kittery, ME and Portsmouth, NH.  Kittery is the oldest town in the state of Maine, and Portsmouth is the oldest in New Hampshire.

Memorial Bridge

The Memorial Bridge was opened August 17, 1923, by 5 year old Eileen Foley, who would later become the Mayor of Portsmouth.  Click Here to see the movies of the construction and dedication of the bridge in 1923.

Sarah Mildred Long Bridge

In 1923 a rail crossing was establised to
get freight across the Piscataqua River

In 1940, The Maine-New Hampshire Interstate Bridge (Toll 10¢) opened relieving traffic in Downtown Portsmouth

Piscataqua River Bridge (I-95)

 
The I-95 Piscataqua River Bridge was opened in 1972, filling
a missing link in the major east coast Interstate Highway.
